Today’s Google doodle commemorates renowned cartoonist Mario Miranda’s 90th birth anniversary. Miranda is known for his articles that were featured in the Times of India and Illustrated Weekly of India. He passed away in December, 2011.

The doodle depicts scenes at a bus stop where people can be seen holding umbrellas in the rain. In what can be termed as ironical, both Chaos and serenity can be seen to coexist at the time of the downpour. While some are caught aghast by the downpour which under all likelihood came unwarned (gauging from the sight of the harried old man running across the street with newspaper over his head), there are others who can be seen to enjoy the soggy interlude-Case in point being couple enjoying a warm embrace under the blanket of an umbrella, and a young toddler and his grandfather beaming with their eyes fixed upon the clouds in the sky. The whole doodle is done in monochrome alluding to the times they were meant to represent. The only objects that appear colourful are the umbrellas done in varying shades of blue, red and orange.

Miranda attained acclaim for his pictorial travelogues on famous cities that included Lisbon and London. The occasion will also be marked in his hometown, Goa with a book dedicated to his life-The Life of Mario-1949, scheduled to be launched at Mario Gallery by his long-time friend Gerald da Cunha. The book is part of a series that also includes the years 1950 and 1951.

The Doodle has been created by cartoonist, Aaron Renier, who tweeted about the same with hashtag #MarioMiranda.
