Horror is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you still feel confident of overcoming your fears then you should try facing scary ghosts, prying spirits, possessed toys or even the soul-dead zombies at any time in the most (un)likely places like spooky isolated houses, narrow dark-lit passages dungeons, or even open woods. Have we scared you enough? No? Then here a few creepy horror games you should try.
• Dead Space
If you are already a nervous-wreck then this game will surely push you over the edge. Set in deep space, the story begins at the end of the annihilation of Marker about three years ago in the original console game. The times are uncertain and the future is unknown. Post the destruction, you are now on an inexact mission in Mines of Titan drifting from star to star, detached from civilization. The visuals tell a story of fallen Sprawl that bears the grimness in the atmosphere. The civilization is left scattered only in numbers and the aliens are taking over with mindless massacring of humans in their path. All you see around is pool of blood, pile of corpses, shards of broken glasses, wrecked parts of ship and disarray everywhere.
Even in your solitude suddenly you hear footsteps in the hollow empty passages and the tension amplifies with a fully voice-acted, background score and sound effects. The aliens are here and you have no option but to gear up. A third person camera hovers over te shoulder, as your guide – who is incidentally also the narrator directing you through hollow passages, calling out your code name ’Vandal’. What follows is the super-chilling suspense, intense combat without a pause and extreme bloodbath. Your only aim is to survive. The solitary background in deep space, the grotesque aliens and the hard steel floor and walls, everything in this game sends a chill running through your spine. The combination of an impulsive combat + suspense + horror gameplay, gorgeous graphics, vivid sound effects and intuitive controls make this game a great recommendation.

• Dead Trigger 2 : Christmas Update
The zombie apocalypse is the most dreaded prediction till date. If you are one of the zombie-doomsday believers, then you definitely would love this game. It begins in a post-apocalyptic world where a constant danger lingers in the air with Zombies crawling around everywhere. Alas, you are able to leave the god forsaken place and board a plane to South America. And just when you close your eyes to relax in mid-air thinking you left the horror behind, a big jolt, panic buzz and screams wake you up to the sight of passengers flying out, dropping to ground as they zoom out across your window. Brace yourself!
This time you are stuck on a plane with zombies all around trying to kill you. Instantly you spring into action, shooting endlessly in a bid to make your way to reach an exit with a parachute. The first person shooter camera angles along with incredibly vivid graphics makes this game a must-play. You also have new environments like plane, helicopter, cargo jets, walk through contaminated areas and other open spaces that render a novel twist. The sprawling zombies do not let you rest even a bit amidst all the shooting action. New weapons like butterfly knives, AK -74 and Japanese sword katana adds speed and a ‘Kill Bill’ style novelty. The game packs the non-stop action and close-encounters with zombies in a horrifying combination that will make you skip a heartbeat.

• The Woods
If you haven’t been able to sit through the entire movie – The Blair Witch Project without shutting your eyes in horror and dismay, chances are that you won’t be able to breeze through this game either without squirming in your seat with fear. But if you are still up for an intense ghost-hunting experience in mindboggling places, then be my guest. A psychological horror, The Woods reminds you of the haunted forest setting from the movie that instantly grips you with suspense and horror. A paranormal investigator needs an apprentice to investigate and stop the demons that have inhabited the haunted forest for long. You, may I say unfortunately, have volunteered to be the apprentice.
You roll up the sleeves to help the investigator to collect the lost pages of a ritual book while unravelling the mysterious events around, only to be stopped in your track by meddling strange spirits. The widespread land is covered with long trees that make you feel completely alone, helpless and lost in a disturbing forest. The atmosphere around is tainted with strange foreboding aura and the minimalistic graphics provide a good fright. The game also has in-built ‘reaction camera’ which captures your instant jumpy reactions to the sudden scares propping up every now and then as you trail through the dark woods with nothing but your flashlight. The suspense will remind you of your mom’s forewarnings at an early age – ‘Don’t go into the Woods!”

• Dungeon Nightmares
Think Zombies. Well it’s scary. Think Dungeons. That can be spooky. Now add both the elements together, which gives you Zombie invasion in Dungeons. This surely is entitled to bear the tag of the ultra-spooky and scariest game ever made. The gameplay is so water-tight, that it instills hair-raising fright even on the mobile screen. It seems heavily inspired by some of the 90’s horror games. In the game, you are stuck in endless loop of dungeon nightmares from which there is no escape. Each night you are caught up the in a different horror. And you are left alone guessing about the lurking danger that hides in the murky walls of Dungeon’s barely lit rooms and passages. Your aim is to collect all the objects, old artefacts and gold bars while coming in contact with all sorts of scary beings. The intricate and changing levels add more twist as you go along. As soon as you exit a dungeon, the next night begins and the whole layout of dungeon changes.
The suspense is just killing with the first-person perspective rendered in the game. The fog, dark alleys, sudden warning notes sets the tone of dreadful confusion that is bound to make you jump off your seat. The scariest part of the game according to me is the sound of the breath that just keeps you on the edge. There is no scream or dramatic music, just chilling silence and loneliness with a very unambiguous feeling that something or someone is definitely there in the dungeon besides you.

• Five Nights at Freddy’s
The game is dubbed as truly terrifying even by most of the avid horror game fans. Its popularity has resulted in its makers churning out one version after another. Five Nights at Freddy’s is tagged as the scariest game so far that uses just plain tension building gameplay to cause sudden jump scenarios.
The premise of the game is simple. Remember the movie Night at the Museum, wherein all artefacts came to life at night. Well, the gameplay somewhat resembles it, but it probably is much closer to Chucky-the killer doll. You are a security guard overseeing the place filled with the possessed animatronics and mechanical creatures that are out there to kill you. You are tasked with checking multiple rooms. This puts a strain of multi-tasking as you swipe between different room views, carefully looking out for anything suspicious. One moment you are watching the stand-still toys and as soon as you turn back they come after you. You are bound to feel helpless and scared while being trapped amongst these evil toys in a small office that stare at you from a distance or literally jump out making you scream. But remember to put on a mask as soon as you suspect someone staring at you, or else you are doomed.
The graphics and shifting camera views are sudden and very realistic across all the game versions. But before diving in for a complete session, just ensure you know what are getting into.
